Time Domain Terahertz (or TD-THz) refers to a particular type of terahertz system which generates short pulses having frequency content from .05 THz up to 3.5 THz or more. This very short pulse can be used in the time domain to study the internal structure of objects (much as an ultrasound pulse is used), or, the wide bandwidth can be used as a broadband source to look at the spectral response of materials.
The TeraMetrix T-Ray series of products uses an ultrashort pulse laser and a photoconductive switch to both generate and detect this short electro-magnetic transient.
By using an optical fiber to deliver this ultrashort pulse to the transmitter and receiver, the measurement configuration becomes not only flexible, but also robust.
