Optic Communications and Photonic Control

Photonic Control for OEMs

Overview

An important application of advanced photonic control modules is fiber optic interferometry. Interferometer systems are often used to make very small measurements that are not achievable any other way. The basic principle is to interfere two or more sources of light to create an interference pattern that can be measured and analyzed to extract information about the object or phenomenon being studied. Much information can be gathered by either measuring the phase, amplitude, frequency, or even the polarization.

The basic building blocks for any fiber optic based interferometer are the light source, detection circuit, and passive components to route the optical signals, as well as modules that can control the polarization or optical path length and delay. Luna offers a complete line of active and passive fiber optic modules and components for applications when performance cannot be compromised.

Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical Coherence Tomography is a non-invasive optical imaging technique that uses backscattered or reflected light to capture details with micrometer-resolution inside materials and biological systems. It is based on low-coherence interferometry. Luna supplies all optical modules needed to build an OCT optical engine.

Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs)

Fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs) are used in high-performance guidance, navigation and stabilization systems in avionics and aerospace markets. FOGs use the Sagnac effect (Sagnac interferometer) to do precise measurements of rotation rate and angle. Luna supplies high-quality fiber optic coils which are the main sensing element in the FOG systems.

OEM Modules for Fiber Optic Sensing

Fiber optic sensors utilize the natural backscattering of light, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) or other elements to obtain measurements. Such optical sensors can measure temperature, strain, pressure, and other parameters by monitoring changes in the light within the fiber. Luna has high-performance optical modules needed to build and optimize the measurement accuracy of fiber sensor systems.
