The mission of the Aircraft Airworthiness & Sustainment Conference is to identify the challenges and the collaborative work being done within the aerospace community in improving the safety, airworthiness, availability, and cost effectiveness of both military and commercial aircraft fleets. The battle of maintaining an aging fleet with the numerous resource and engineering challenges is a primary focus.
Luna’s presentation: Monitoring Environmental Severity and Coatings Corrosion Protection
Abstract: Effective corrosion management of aircraft traditionally relies on scheduled inspections, routine washes, and use of corrosion protective coatings. New monitoring systems provide the ability to improve each phase of corrosion management, enhancing aircraft reliability and maximizing availability. Scheduled washes and inspections may not account for the actual conditions experienced by an aircraft, and with on-aircraft environment severity and corrosivity monitoring, it is possible to track individual aircraft to implement condition-based management of corrosion. Individual aircraft tracking for improved corrosion management requires the identification and measurement of parameters relevant to aircraft corrosion. Based on ISO 9223, the parameters of greatest significance are relative humidity, temperature, and contaminants. Environmental severity may be classified by these environmental parameters or by measurement of corrosion rate of a sample alloy. New monitoring systems provide the ability to continuously track both environmental parameters and corrosion rates to classify conditions of an outdoor environment or spaces within an aircraft airframe. These continuous measurements can be used to detect short term conditions associated with diurnal cycles and aircraft operation, and longer-term trends associated with seasonal variations, basing and maintenance. The same monitoring systems can be used for continuous monitoring of coatings performance on an aircraft, providing direct measurements of protective properties. Measurements of coating condition and protection against corrosion can focus on corrosion hot spots within an airframe, indicating the need for inspection and repair. The monitoring systems can also be used to monitor performance of new coatings in comparison to legacy systems, helping to manage the risk when introducing a new coating. Results of outdoor testing and aircraft monitoring have demonstrated the capability to measure time of wetness, contaminant deposition, corrosion rates, and coating protection. Results for the characterization of corrosivity for different types of aircraft, positions within the airframe and bases will be given. Strategies for setting thresholds for aircraft wash and corrosion inspections will be given. Results of continuous monitoring of aircraft coating performance will be given.
