What is Optical Coherence Tomography and how does Luna help advance traditional imaging methods? | Part 1

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a powerful imaging technique that offers high-resolution, cross-sectional imaging of internal microstructures in materials and biological systems. With the ability to capture images that can be 100 times greater in resolution than traditional imaging, OCT has profound implications for the diagnosis of internal problems in biological tissues as well as inorganic samples. OCT has become increasingly popular for medical applications such as non-invasive ophthalmological imaging, endoscopic gastrointestinal tract imaging and diagnostics for coronary intervention.

ophthalmological imagingBy utilizing an interferometric setup to measure backscattered light, OCT reconstructs detailed depth profiles at various locations. The exceptional resolution of OCT images allows for precise characterization of biological and material structures and accurate guidance for medical procedures. Moreover, various industrial applications such as CMM metrology and 3D semiconductor inspections have adopted the OCT technology.

Fiber-based OCT systems require precise polarization management, accurate delay control, fast wavelength tuning and complete optical system integration capabilities. Optical path matching is mandatory, and high-performance optical delay lines are required.

For over a decade, Luna has been a trusted partner for OCT system integrators, offering OEM modules, subsystems, and test & measurement instruments across multiple wavelengths including 1550 nm, 1310 nm, 1060 nm, and 840 nm.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our OCT Series as we discuss Luna’s wide range of solutions for OCT systems designers and component suppliers that include:

  • Products for building OCT systems – OEM components and custom subassemblies
  • Dynamic polarization control for tracking real-time changes
  • More sophisticated polarization control and analysis devices for Polarization-Sensitive OCT (PS-OCT) Systems
  • High spatial resolution reflectometers, which can help scan the OCT interferometer for high reflection peaks and high losses
  • Swept lasers, with demonstrated reliability, that enable long-term, worry-free operation of OCT systems
