Photodiode technology is ideal for light-level sensing applications, as the output current of the photodiode will vary in accordance with the intensity of the light that it senses.

This change in electrical output of the photodiode can be used as a switching mechanism for lighting systems in commercial, industrial, and automotive applications.

The same technology can be used to accurately measure the transmission attenuation of semi-opaque materials, window tints, etc.  By using wavelength-enhanced photodiodes, it is possible to measure changes in intensity of specific parts of the light spectrum.  This is ideal for measuring the effectiveness of UV-blocking lenses, optical filters, and also for power/intensity measurement of wavelength-specific light sources such as lasers and UV lamps.
