Luna has developed a corrosion sensor suite for aircraft monitoring that provides actionable information without the need for post processing and expert analysis.

Corrosion of aircraft and rotorcraft is one of the single largest cost drivers for the U.S. Military today.  Localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, exfoliation, and environment assisted cracking is difficult to detect and degrades structural integrity.  Currently, corrosion control is based on costly schedule based maintenance and inspection practices.  There is currently no way to assess the cumulative severity of corrosion exposure of an aircraft between maintenance actions or over the service life of an airframe.

In order to maximize aircraft availability and reduce inspection and maintenance demands, Luna has developed a corrosion sensor suite for aircraft monitoring.  A corrosion monitoring system capable of predicting and identifying corrosion damage is an important part of a comprehensive corrosion control plan for individual asset tracking and fleet management.  The corrosion monitoring system can be used to measure corrosivity at a local corrosion hotspot within a structure and evaluate cumulative environmental severity for an airframe.  The corrosion monitoring system is designed to be easily retrofit to airframes and does not require aircraft power for operation.  The system is a modular smart sensor network that can be readily tailored for specific aircraft applications.  Using embedded processing and corrosion classification models, the system provides maintainers with actionable information without the need for post processing and expert analysis.
